The Way of The Superior Man

The Way of The Superior Man by David Deida, is a very interesting and information packed book that all men must read. It has great nuggets of wisdom that have held true since the dawn of time. Here are some of the insights I got while reading the book.

A Man's Way

The mission or search for freedom is the priority of the masculine. You must spend at least an hour of your day pursuing what you love most. You cannot sit by and wait for the perfect opportunity as that will never happen

For the men who have lived significant lives, they have never waited for food, money or women. They simply gave their all to the world without question.

Live with an open heart even if it hurts

"Closing down in the midst of pain is a denial of a man's true nature. A superior man is free in feeling and action, even amidst great pain and hurt. If necessary, a man should live with a hurting heart rather than a closed one. He should learn to stay in the wound of pain and act with spontaneous skill and love even from that place." - D. Deida

To act as a superior man, you must feel the pain with your whole body. Do not close your body but embrace it the hurt wholeheartedly

Know Your Real Edge/Limit and don't fake it

A fearful man who knows he is fearful is far more trustable than a fearful man who isn't aware of his fear. And a fearful man who still leans into his fear, living at his edge and putting his gift out from there, is more trustworthy and more inspirational than a fearful man who hangs back in the comfort zone, unwilling to even experience his fear on a day to day level- D. Deida

Your edge is where you stop short or where you compromise your gift and embrace your fears. You must be open to listening to others but at the end of the day, you have to make the decisions according to your beliefs. If you fail, well and good as you will learn from it.

Your Purpose Must Come Before Your Relationship

Your mission in life is your priority. Anything else is secondary. Unless you know your mission and have aligned your life to it, your core will feel empty. The time you spend with your woman must be the time you really want to spend with her as you will give her your undivided attention.

Without purpose, you will move on with life without knowing where you are going and waste valuable time that could have been spent in pursuing your purpose.

Lean Just Beyond Your Edge

This means that you must be always be in a state of slight discomfort. This way you can never get comfortable with where you are and with what you can do. You must always be striving, pushing further and further. Your fear is the best definition of your self. Fear should be your friend as it tells you where your real edge lies. By making fear your friend, you don't become uncomfortable with it.

Be Willing to Change Everything in Your Life

There is no way to rush this process. You may need to get an intermediary job to hold you over until the next layer of purpose makes itself clear. Or, perhaps you have enough money to simply wait. But in any case, it is important to open yourself to a vision of what is next. You stay open to a vision of your deeper purpose by not filling your time with distractions. Don't watch TV or play computer games. Don't go out drinking beer with your friends every night or start dating a bunch of women. Simply wait. You may wish to go on a retreat in a remote area and be by yourself. Whatever it is you decide to do, consciously keep yourself open and available to receiving a vision of what is next. It will come. - D. Deida

Your deep purpose is surrounded by layers of purpose that you must remove to reach the core. Each task you do that aligns with your purpose gets you closer to the core. You must be able to adapt along the way discarding the useless and embracing the useful

Don't Get Lost in Tasks and Duties

Don't put too much attention in meaningless tasks that don't align with your purpose. Tasks like laundry, washing dishes etc are good for house keeping but that's all there is to it. Always remember that your purpose comes first, everything else is secondary.

Thank you for reading all the way to end. If you have any suggestions or feedback, leave them in the comment section. See you next time.
